Resin?

Journal Entry: Fri Dec 2, 2011, 12:34 PM

Hey all, just a quick journal.

I have a good 3 heads I've been working on and two cool sculptures too that I have been wanting to cast in resin. My problem is that my local craft store only carries clear resin. I've gotten a lot of research and experiments done with that, but as far as regular casting resin I've yet to find something promising.
Any suggestions on making a whole head mold (instead of just the front of a head with a flat back) and casting resins?

Thanks :)

to make a whole head couldn't you do the front and the back separately and join them together?

I thought about that and looked it up but o_o omgosh there is just SO much to do to make sure the seams fit perfectly! :(
I think this is how you do it in one piece, make a mold-box and suspend the object you want to be molded at the top, and then fill a soft mold like silicone around it. Then if I filled it with resin and made a few special cuts at the side I could pop it out? ;( I've seen it done before but its hard to teach yourself something that complex without someone showing you in person.. eep! I could experiment but my problem is that I don't want to waste money if I fail you know? :<

Yay, you're asking about something I have some experience in, and a ton of reference links on to boot. :D

Both Tap Plastics ([link]) and Smooth-On ([link]) have all of the materials needed for resin casting, and also some great tutorials to help you decide what kind of material you'd like to make the mold out of, how to make two-part molds, and some great tips and tricks. Here's Tap Plastic's two-part mold tutorial, for example: ([link]), another tutorial from mold-making.com ([link]), and yet more tutorials on paint-sculpt.com ([link]). Smooth-On is the newest of the sites that I've found, but they've got a MASSIVE library of free video tutorials, and some neat materals, like resin colorants, metal powders for cold casting, etc.

Thank you so much for all of this info! I've been researching for SUCH a long time, but it's useless unless you can get feedback from someone who actually uses the materials :)
hopefully I can start up casting soon :D

I was going to say something similar but you said it all :D

I get so sad though because their stock is all so awesome but I can't get them to ship to Britain without like a £100 shipping fee haha.

This is something that has always interested me, but I've not looked up as of yet. You just rocked my socks off ;) by sharing this!

Makes me rethink how I sculpt things.
